Guidance Resources: International Scholarship Opportunities for Haitian Students
If you are interested in pursuing higher education abroad, many full and partial scholarship opportunities are available. To maximize your chances of success, follow our preparation guide before exploring the official programs organized by level of study below.
Important Note: Scholarship deadlines, amounts, and application requirements change every year. The information below is current at the time of publication, but always verify the exact timeline on the official website or with the relevant embassy before beginning your application.
3-Step Methodological Guide to a Successful Application
The key to securing an international scholarship is early preparation. Do not wait until a call for applications opens to begin the process:
1. Prepare and Legalize Your Academic Documents
Gather your diplomas (Baccalauréat, Bachelor’s degree), complete transcripts, and academic records now. For these documents to be valid abroad, they generally need to go through the following legalization process in Haiti:
Validation and signature by the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) for academic documents.
Final legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs (MAEC).
Tip: Have each document scanned as a high-quality PDF that is lightweight, clear, and legible.
2. Plan Ahead for Language Tests and Translations
Many scholarships require proof of language proficiency, even for some programs in French-speaking countries:
For English-speaking countries or Asia (Taiwan, Japan, China): Prepare for and schedule the TOEFL or IELTS if you choose a program taught in English.
For France or French-speaking universities: A language proficiency test such as the TCF or DELF/DALF is often required.
Official translations: If you are applying to Brazil, Taiwan, China, Japan, or Egypt, have your official documents translated by a certified/sworn translator into the required language (Spanish, English, or Portuguese, depending on the destination).
3. Prepare Your Academic Statement and Recommendation Letters
Selection committees look for candidates who can contribute to Haiti’s development. Strengthen your application by preparing:
A compelling statement of purpose: Clearly explain why you have chosen this field of study and university, and how your education will benefit your community when you return home.
Two to three letters of recommendation: Contact former professors or thesis supervisors in advance to obtain strong, personalized academic recommendations.
For Bachelor’s Degree Studies (Undergraduate)
If you have recently completed secondary school or wish to begin an undergraduate degree, here are some major institutions and programs that recruit students from Haiti:
Agricultural & Environmental Sciences (Latin America)
EARTH University (Costa Rica): A world-renowned institution specializing in sustainable agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship.
Advantage: Full scholarships are available through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at EARTH University, which targets young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
How to apply: Submit your application directly online through the official EARTH University Admissions platform.
Zamorano University (Honduras): A prestigious agricultural university known for its practical approach and excellence in agricultural sciences.
How to apply: Review the eligibility criteria for Caribbean applicants and begin your application through the official Zamorano University website.
Government Scholarships and Bilateral Cooperation
Moroccan Government Excellence Scholarships (AMCI): Every year, Morocco awards a quota of full scholarships to foreign high-school graduates, including Haitian students, for undergraduate studies at its public universities.
How to apply: Applications are not submitted directly to Morocco. They are submitted through the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training or the Embassy of Morocco, within the national quota. Preselected applications are then forwarded to the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI). Follow the official AMCI website [2] as well as recruitment notices published by the Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
EGYAID Program (Egypt): The Egyptian government offers tuition-waiver scholarships for international students at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral levels. Housing and living expenses are generally the student’s responsibility.
How to apply: Applications are submitted online through the Study in Egypt application platform. The deadline is generally around mid-September for the following academic year, but this should be confirmed each year.
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC): Provides comprehensive support—including tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend—for undergraduate studies at participating Chinese public universities.
Important note: Applicants for undergraduate programs generally need to take an aptitude assessment or provide a complete academic record, depending on the university. For undergraduate applicants, it is often necessary to consult the official CSCA website regarding competency assessments.
How to apply: Applications are submitted through the CampusChina / Study in China portal, often through the Chinese Embassy or directly to the selected Chinese university.
Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT — Undergraduate): A fully funded scholarship that includes a preparatory year for Japanese language study. The written selection exams (mathematics, English, and sometimes Japanese) are highly competitive.
How to apply: Application forms and submission schedules are published by the Embassy of Japan in Haiti. Find the official instructions on the Embassy of Japan in Haiti platform.
For Master’s and PhD Studies
If you already hold a Bachelor’s degree (or engineering degree) and wish to specialize further, the following programs offer substantial or full financial support:
Graduate Scholarships in Brazil
GCUB-Mob Mobility Program: The Group of Brazilian Universities’ International Cooperation (GCUB) offers Master’s and PhD scholarships each year, generally including a monthly stipend, at participating Brazilian universities.
